Everything You Need to Know About Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is increasingly preferred thanks to its scar-free structure and shorter recovery period. You can find all the details in our article.

What Are Rhinoplasty Surgeries?

The nose is one of the most prominent facial features and holds great importance in terms of aesthetics. Structural deformities of the nose can affect not only external appearance but also a person’s self-confidence. Located at the center of the face, the nose should be in harmony with overall facial features.

Rhinoplasty refers to surgical procedures performed to change the shape of the nose or improve nasal functions. In addition to aesthetic concerns, it also offers an important solution for eliminating breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty surgeries are generally examined in two main groups: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. Although both methods aim for the same result, their surgical techniques and recovery processes differ.

What Is the Difference Between Closed Rhinoplasty and Open Rhinoplasty?

The main difference between closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty lies in the location of the surgical incisions. Closed rhinoplasty is performed through incisions made inside the nose, whereas open rhinoplasty involves an external incision at the nasal tip.

While closed rhinoplasty leaves no visible external scars, open rhinoplasty may rarely result in a noticeable incision mark. The closed technique is ideal for more minimal surgical interventions.

What Is Closed Rhinoplasty? What Are Its Advantages?

Closed rhinoplasty is a scarless nose surgery technique in which all surgical procedures are performed through the inside of the nose. The greatest advantage of this method is that it leaves no external incision marks.

Closed rhinoplasty can be applied not only for aesthetic corrections but also for the treatment of functional intranasal problems. Nasal deviations, turbinate hypertrophy, concha bullosa, and sinus problems can be corrected in the same session.

Less bleeding, faster recovery, and higher patient comfort are among the most important advantages of closed rhinoplasty.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Closed Rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty is suitable for individuals who want small to moderate aesthetic changes in their nasal structure. Mild nasal humps, drooping nasal tips, or asymmetries can be successfully corrected with this method.

It can also be preferred for patients with functional problems such as nasal congestion, turbinate enlargement, and intranasal deviations.

Individuals who have completed nasal development and are in good general health are suitable candidates for closed rhinoplasty.

How Is Closed Rhinoplasty Performed?

Closed rhinoplasty is performed through small incisions made inside the nose. The surgery is usually carried out under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1.5–2 hours.

The surgeon reshapes the nasal bridge, cartilage structure, and nasal tip from inside the nose. All procedures are completed without making any external incisions.

Are There Any Disadvantages of Closed Rhinoplasty?

Although closed rhinoplasty has many advantages, it may be insufficient in cases where major structural changes are required. In severe trauma cases or advanced deformities, open rhinoplasty may be preferred.

Additionally, closed rhinoplasty is a technique that requires a high level of experience and expertise from the surgeon.

Postoperative Care After Closed Rhinoplasty

Mild swelling and bruising may be observed in the first days after surgery. These findings largely subside within the first week.

Silicone splints are usually removed after 2–4 days. The nasal cast and tapes on the nose are typically removed within 8–12 days.

It may take between 6 months and 2 years for the nose to reach its final shape. Regular follow-up visits with the doctor are very important during this process.
